I spent twenty-one years in uniform, first as a Navy Electrician's Mate aboard the nuclear-powered carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, then as a Coast Guard Aviation Electrical Technician, C-130 navigator, and flight examiner with more than two thousand flight hours.

I was the primary QA inspector on all C-130 aircraft systems, and later Chief of Quality Inspections for a fleet of five MH-65 Dolphin helicopters, leading eighty-seven personnel. Aviation QA inspectors are not trained to look at equipment. They are trained to find where and how it fails, before it does. When a missed defect costs lives instead of money, you develop a particular kind of attention, and it does not switch off when you retire.
I have also lived this from the buyer's side. I have bought old houses and new ones, renovated them, finished basements, and done my own electrical work. I know what it feels like to walk through a house you want and wonder what you are not seeing.
